“The Skinny Debt Diet”
January 6, 2009
I think you know by now that one of my favorite bloggers is Steph over at Back in Skinny Jeans.
I read her regularly, and I absolutely LOVE her new plan called “The Skinny Debt Diet” that she kicked off this week. The basic premise is to focus on financial prosperity vs. weight this month.
In Steph’s words, “The Skinny Debt Diet is very simple in that it is a way to start developing a healthier relationship with your money and debt to boost your financial wellness, and help you become healthier physically and fiscally. The Skinny Debt Diet is a holistic approach that focuses on four main categories: feelings, finances, fitness, and food, and focuses on making tiny changes.”
I’ve talked here about my conflicting relationships with money and food. I am diligent as all get-out with my food and exercise, but I am less so when it comes to my personal finances.
So reading Steph’s post was truly inspirational and timely, with it being the start of a new year and all. Instead of worrying about our weight, we’d be striving for $0 debt.
Since the two are often related this time of year (though this year more than ever the economy is probably taking precedence), there’s no reason the two can’t be interrelated.
In this economy, so few of us are feeling good about our 401Ks, our health insurance premiums, the size of our savings accounts (or checking accounts!), etc. So why not make a concerted effort to make little changes to see big results?
After all, when we feel good about our finances, we tend to eat better and work out more. Which makes us healthier in the long run — making our savings accounts fatter and our debt thinner.
Hey Steph, you can count me in!
How about you? Would you be willing to give her plan a shot?

That’s funny. I am freakin’ hardcore when it comes to controlling and keeping my money in order. I feel that a little stress to keep it all in check goes a long way to keep the stress level down later. It is easier for me because I really don’t like, believe in, or use credit cards.

That’s great, Run4Change. I seem to have picked and chosen my battles but now that my personal finances are in line, I’m hoping my weight falls, too

Totally. I feel like my relationship w/ food and $ are so intertwined; I’m either in the “scrimp save & eat less” mentality or the “life is short, I want that sweater, let’s go out to eat!” mentality. I’m trying to find a middle ground!
